Do you know about Boe?*

Boe Beauty is an affordable, high quality make-up line available exclusively at Big W Australia. Prices start as low as just $2.00!

Boe Professional is Boe Beauty’s sister brand and the quality of these high-end inspired products are impressive, but the prices are still very affordable. The Boe Professional line contains everything you need to create all the latest make-up looks for a fraction of the price.

I was invited to a VIP Bloggers’ Event at Boe HQ in South Melbourne last year and it was so fun to see what goes on behind the scenes. We were treated to a yummy lunch, lots of bubbly and trialling some yet-to-hit-stores products. The team at Boe also sent us all home with a very generous gift bag of products to try at home.

Some of the Boe Professional products I was given to try.

I think that all of the Boe Beauty and Boe Professional products I’ve tried so far* have been amazing quality for the price, but the standouts for me would have to be the lipsticks. All the shades I’ve tried are pigmented with build-able coverage and are super comfortable to wear.

The Colour Pro Super Shine Lipstick* in Athena has become one of my favourite everyday lip colours.  It’s a beautiful peachy-nude colour with a dewy shine. It’s like a lipgloss without the stickiness factor and it’s pretty long lasting too.

The Colour Pro Matte Perfect Lipstick* in Vixen has become my go-to dramatic red lipstick. It’s a classic Marilyn Monroe-esque red and although it’s a true matte, it doesn’t dry out my lips. This is probably due to the amazing concoction of natural oils working under the surface – Jojoba, Vitamin E and Sweet Almond.

Honestly, I prefer Boe Professional Lipsticks to most more expensive drugstore brands that I’ve tried. If you realise at the last minute that you need a particular shade of lipstick to match your new dress and you don’t want to spend a fortune,  I suggest you give Boe a go – you won’t be disappointed.

Boe Beauty and Boe Professional Products and sold exclusively at Big W Australia. For more information check out their website.

So, tell me, what do you think of Boe?

Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour Review*

It’s winter here in Australia; and in Melbourne we’re having a particularly chilly one!  When everything from the fashion to the weather is dreary and grey, a statement lip is always a mood-booster.  It was perfect timing when I received the NEW Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in Rosewood to review.

A swatch of Laura Mercier Paint Wash Lip Colour in Rosewood.

A swatch of Laura Mercier Paint Wash Lip Colour in Rosewood.

When I swatch Rosewood on my arm, it is a super pigmented burgundy-brown shade and on my lips (which are quite pink naturally) it looks like a burgundy-nude.  I am obsessed with this colour!  It gives an instantly glam feel to any winter outfit

The formula is super creamy and hydrating (perfect for winter) and stains the lips slightly.  I love that the finish isn’t too glossy or too matte, but a lovely combination of both (demi-matte.)  It’s very comfortable to wear.

What’s really unique about this liquid lip colour is the applicator.  It’s a small paddle brush with a hollow part for the product to sit in.  The tip of the brush is flat and can be used to line your lips before painting them.  This two-step process helps me ensure that I don’t get any gloss on my chin (which I’m usually very good at doing!)

The Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colours come in a range of fabulous shades and I’d love to invest in some more.

Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour is available at Laura Mercier David Jones counters, David Jones online and Adore Beauty online.

What’s your go-to winter liquid lip colour?

Can't go wrong with a great lip colour and a cosy knit!

Happy UD Day!

The calm before the storm.

The calm before the storm.

The day is finally here ladies (and make-up loving men)!

The Urban Decay cosmetics collection has been unveiled on Australian shelves for the first time at Mecca Maxima!

I was one of many crazy make-up lovers who flocked to their local Mecca Maxima (Westfield Fountain Gate, for me) at 7am(!) to cue-up for two hours to get early bird access to all the Urban Decay goodies.  My beautiful blogger friend Melissa Bubbles joined me.

The line at 7am.

The line at 7am.

At 8.55am, the winner of the door prize was announced and we were assured that there were plenty of Naked Urban Decay goodies for all of us.  At 9am, the moment finally arrived for the doors to open!  A Westfield security guard let us into the store in groups of ten at a time.

The girls at Mecca Maxima Fountain Gate were kind enough to keep the crowds company until 9am and offered us complimentary water bottles and muesli bars.

My original plan was to only buy the Naked 3 Palette, which I’d been admiring online for years, but once I saw the products in person, I wanted to buy almost everything!

As well as buying the Naked 3 Palette, I also invested in a Naked Skin Foundation and the Shadow Box Palette.

My Urban Decay haul.

For being one of the first 100 people through the door this morning, I also received a cute Urban Decay make-up bag with samples of: Naked lipgloss, Perversion mascara, 24/7 Glide-on eyeliner and various base products.

Inside the free gift bag for the first 100 shoppers.

Can’t wait to have a play with these products and share the looks I create with them and product reviews with you all!

Did you brave the crowds this morning?  I’d love to see your hauls!

Mary Kay’s Spring 2014/Summer 2014 Fresh New Colour Look Collection*

image1

Following my review of the Mary Kay Cosmetics Fairytale & Fantasies Collection*, I was fortunate to be sent some more Mary Kay goodies to try out.  The Mary Kay’s Spring 2014/Summer 2014 Fresh New Colour Look Collection* arrived in a super cute beauty box (pictured above.)

image2

Inside the Mary Kay Colour Beauty Box (pictured above) was: four Mary Kay True Dimensions Lipsticks; four Mary Kay Nourishine Plus Lip Glosses; four Mary Kay Cream Eye Colours; one Mary Kay Lip Liner in Clear; one Mary Kay Cream Eye Colour/Concealer brush and a cute make-up pouch.

Mary Kay True Dimensions Lipsticks and swatches: (from left to right) Sassy Fuchsia, Tangerine Pop, Berry À La Mode and Citrus Flirt.

Mary Kay True Dimensions Lipsticks and swatches: (from left to right) Sassy Fuchsia, Tangerine Pop, Berry À La Mode and Citrus Flirt.

The four new True Dimensions Lipsticks (pictured above) are sheer but buildable.  As you can see from the swatches, the colours are not very pigmented which is common in shiny lipsticks as they tend to be glossier than more solid matte lipsticks.  I love shiny, light lipsticks like these as the weather gets warmer as my lips are drier and I feel that matte lipsticks just dry me out more – yuck!  These lippies feel very hydrating and I will definitely be reaching for them on warm nights out.  The only colour I’m not loving is Berry À La Mode which I feel is more of a winter shade.

Mary Kay NouriShine Lip Glosses (from left to right): Rock and Red, Berry Tart, Mango Tango and Pink Luster.

Mary Kay NouriShine Plus Lip Glosses and swatches (from left to right): Pink Luster, Berry Tart, Mango Tango and Rock and Red.

I’m loving the new NouriShine Plus Lip Gloss Shades (pictured above.)  The colours are gorgeous and so summery.  I’m a big lipgloss person in summer; it’s just so much easier to apply and touch-up than lipstick and I like to keep my make-up fuss-free in the warmer months.  Thanks to their antioxidant and vitamin-rich formula, they feel very hydrating on my lips and are quite long lasting.  I like that they are super glossy without being sticky or overly glittery.  The slight shimmer is beautiful and very classy.

Mary Kay Eye Cream Eye Colours (from left to right): Coastal Blue, Glacier Gray, Violet Storm and Meadow Grass.

The Mary Kay Cream Eye Colours are very sheer yet buildable.  They are slightly shimmery which is nice for creating luminous, glowing summer looks.  Other than the gray, the colours aren’t ones I would usually use but they could be used to create fun and bright looks.

Mary Kay Lip Liner in Clear

Mary Kay Lip Liner in Clear

I’m not a big lip liner person, but I love the idea of a clear liner which can be used under any lip colour.  According to the information Mary Kay sent me it is waterproof, long wearing and “prevents lip colour from feathering and bleeding.”  I look forward to putting it to the test!

Mary Kay Cream Eye Colour/Concealer Brush

Mary Kay Cream Eye Colour/Concealer Brush

Mary Kay were very kind to also send me a Cream Eye Colour/Concealer Brush with soft, round bristles.  I don’t have a brush like it and I’m very happy to add it to my collection.

Have you tried any of the new Mary Kay products?  What were your thoughts?

Till next time,

Reflection on 2014

I’m not gonna lie, 2014 was a tough year.  I pushed myself to the absolute limit work and study-wise which meant I was left with little to no “me time.”   In all the craziness and stress, I turned to comfort food and made exercise less of a priority.  I gained some weight which has left me feeling pretty crappy about myself.  I don’t know how much exactly because I don’t weigh myself due to it being too easy for me to become obsessed with the numbers.  I am just going by photos and how my clothes look and feel.  As a girl who has always had body image issues, gaining what is probably around five kilos has left me feeling really down.  I know that to some people, I may seem ridiculous complaining about such a relatively small weight gain but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter how much you weigh or what size you are, if you feel uncomfortable in your own skin you’re going to feel unhappy.  I’m not saying that loosing weight guarantees happiness but I know that when I’m physically fit and fuelling myself with the right food it boosts my mood and energy levels.

Just like I have almost every new year since hitting puberty, one of my new year’s resolutions is to eat less junk and exercise more.  I don’t have a particular number of kilos I want to loose or a size I want to be.  I just want to feel fit and strong and like how I look in photos again.  I am putting some great new habits into place to make my resolutions easier to stick to including: preparing a Menu Plan and grocery shopping for the week a head every Sunday; trying new clean eating recipes each week to prevent boredom; scheduling workouts; and going back to regular dance classes (a form of exercise that I actually LOVE, which is a big deal for a not-so-sporty-girl.)  For the sake of my mental health (and getting through the final year of my uni degree) I am also planning to adjust my work schedule.  I know I am lucky to have the luxury to do that, but it is one of the positives of working for yourself (thankfully there are SOME, haha).  I am also going to continue practising meditation, Reiki and healthy self-talk because happiness and mindfulness helps me feel and look better.

It is so easy to mentally beat myself up for gaining weight and view 2014 as a failure but I need to remind myself that I was busy and I achieved A LOT.  So for the sake of uplifting my spirits (NOT bragging) here is a list of all the GOOD STUFF that happened for me in 2014 (and if you’re feeling shitty about 2014, I suggest you make a list of the positive things that happened to you too):

  • I received one of the best birthday presents ever, my beautiful baby cat Sweeney who has brought me so much joy #crazycatlady
  • My singing teaching business has continued to grow.  My lovely students have passed voice exams; performed in talent competitions; received music scholarships; had lead roles in plays; overcome stage fright; performed in 2 singing school concerts (with costumes!) and gained confidence and I am a part of all of that.
  • I’ve strengthened my relationships with my husband, family and friends.  Thank you to the people who are always there for me and make me laugh hysterically.  You know who you are.
  • I had my first featured role on a TV show (although it was unfortunately a non-speaking one.)  I got to be on TV previews and even a Facebook meme for the show which was pretty cool. #15minutesoffame
  • I had my first auditions for a feature film and for a voice over role.  Unfortunately I wasn’t cast in either role but in the entertainment industry one has to celebrate the baby steps.
  • I was one of the Victorian finalists for the role of Snow White in the Snow White Oz pantomime/musical.
  • I read A LOT of great books and listened to even more audiobooks.
  • I passed 5 units part-time at uni while working two jobs, running a household, maintaining a social life and blogging occasionally.  Still waiting on my medal, haha!
  • I found time for all my favourite trashy TV shows which brought me so many laughs and much needed down time: Dance Moms, Jerseylicious, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Bethenny, Giuliana and Bill, Real Housewives of Melbourne and, most importantly, The Bachelor Australia. #Prorities #dirtystreetpie
  • I somehow found time to squeeze in an amateur musical, ‘Avenue Q.’
  • I did my Reiki 1 course and started meditating more regularly.
  • I went to some AWESOME blogger events and beauty expos.
  • I survived a 3 day Pressed Juices cleanse and gave-up coffee.  A big deal for a previous 3+ cups a day girl.
  • I had a blog post shared by The Glow, Mama Mia and retweeted by some of their editors.
  • I gave-up acrylic nails for good!
  • I invested in (and actually figured out how to use) some great make-up brushes and I actually think I am much better at doing my make-up now.
  • Made my YouTube related beauty debut on Melissa Bubbles’ YouTube Channel and she actually invited me back two more times! Thanks Mel!
  • I finally figured out how to French braid my own hair. #Nevertoolate

So, if you made it through the list without getting bored or deciding I’m a self-obssessed idiot (I swear I’m not), as you can see it was a pretty fruitful year and I need to stop giving myself such a hard time.  As I said, If you’re regretting how you spent 2014 please try writing your own list of positives, things probably weren’t as bad as you thought 🙂

I am determined to make 2015 a big year of positive changes and in my next post I’ll talk in more detail about the strategies I am putting in my place to make achieving them easier.  I am also going to write about my progress once a month on this blog to keep myself accountable.

Thanks for reading my rant and I hope it has left you feeling positive.  Would love to know about your reflections on 2014 and your goals for 2015.  Please comment below!

Mary Kay Cosmetics Fairytales & Fantasies Collection*

Hi everyone,

This is a post that I have been meaning to write for a loooonnnggg time but life has gotten in the way a lot this year.

In March, the lovely ladies at Mary Kay invited a group of beauty bloggers to a fun get-together at the gorgeous Ludlow Bar & Dining Room in Southbank.  At the event, we were treated to delicious canapés, drinks and lots of beauty talk.  At the end of the event we were generously given the latest Mary Kay Special Edition collection to review.  Entitled the Fairytales and Fantasies Collection, it is filled with wintery warm shades to adorn your eyes, lips and nails.

photo 2

As you can see in the picture above, the packaging is a very regal purple colour with gold details, which definitely suits the fairytale theme.  Purple is my favourite colour, so it was an instant winner for me!

The Collection Includes:

  • 4 Smoke and Shimmer Eye Wands in Blue Knight, Amethyst Smoke, Enchanted Mauve and Golden Illusion* ($22AUD each).
  • 2 Kohl Eyeliners in Blue Knight and Mulberry Forest* ($18AUD each).
  • 2 Glossy Lip Stains in Mulberry Forest and Enchanted Mauve* ($24AUD each).
  • 2 Nail Lacquers* ($15AUD each).

Here are some reviews of my favourite products in the collection:

The Smoke and Shimmer Eye Wands*

Shimmer Eye Wands swatched on my hand: (from left to right) Amethyst Smoke, Golden Illusion, Enchanted Mauve and Blue Knight.

I love wand eyeshadows.  They are easy to store and transport, easy to apply and easy to blend.  They are also an excellent timesaver when you are getting ready in a hurry (especially in the morning when an extra few minutes of sleep usually wins over eyeshadow application time.)  The colours of these Smoke and Shimmer wands are gorgeous and very wearable.  The only downside is that they are very sheer and shimmery which means they need to be applied quite thickly for good colour pay off.  I will definitely use the lighter shades for creating quick daytime eyeshadow looks and I would probably combine the dark shades with powder eyeshadows for evening looks.

Kohl Eyeliners

I love coloured eyeliners.  When teamed with matching eyeshadows, they can really make your eyes pop and complete the look.  Once again, these products are very sheer and need to be applied quite thickly, but the colours are lovely and look great applied along the waterline and teamed with the matching Eye Shadow Wands.

Glossy Lip Stains

I was delighted to receive these because I love lip stains.  Nothing in the make-up world annoys me more than lipsticks that need to be applied hourly – ain’t nobody got time for that!  I adore both of these colours, Mulberry Forest is a deliciously rich burgundy and Enchanted Mauve is a stunning nude pink.  I also love that these stains are glossy and moisturising because lots of stains out there can be quite drying.  These stains fade gradually and last for about three hours.

A dramatic evening look I created with Mulberry Forest Glossy Lip Stain on my lips.

In conclusion, I love the concept behind Mary Kay’s Fairytales and Fantasy Collection.  My only suggested improvement would be for the eyeshadow wands and eyeliners to be more pigmented.  The colours are beautiful and wearable and I can’t wait to see what Mary Kay come-up with for their next collection!

Here’s a photo of a make-up look I created using all Mary Kay products.  What do you think?

Soft Glam Make-up Challenege

Hi everyone,

On Friday, I read a post by Alyx Gorman on The Glow (the exciting, new sister site of Mama Mia), about the latest make-up trend – Soft Glam.  Made famous by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez, Soft Glam make-up is fresh, pretty and very sexy.  As Alyx puts it, it is “not full-on porn star face, but definitely more Sports Illustrated than Vogue.”

At the end of her post, Alyx shared a Youtube Soft Glam make-up tutorial by Sonia Castaneda and set the challenge for readers to attempt to recreate the look.  This challenge couldn’t have come along at a better time because I had my husband’s 30th Birthday Party the next day and still hadn’t worked out what to do with my face!  So last night, I set-up my iPhone next to my bathroom mirror and played the video while attempting to recreate the look and here’s what I came-up with:

photo 1

photo 2

What I used

Base: Time Balm Skincare White Tea Honey Face and Body Primer; Australis Mineral Inject Liquid Foundation in Natural Beige; Rimmel London Match Perfection Concealer in Ivory; and a tiny bit of Nude by Nature Mineral Make-up in Light/Medium to set my base products.

Eyebrows: Benefit Browzings Palette in Dark.

Eyes: For the base colour I used the Medium Light shade from Maybelline Hyper Diamonds Palette BR-1; for the lash line and smoky effect I used the fifth colour from the left in the Chi Chi Nudes palette; Benefit They’re Real! Mascara on my lashes and Manicare Glameye Gwen Lashes.

Cheeks/Contouring: Face of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminator (Liquid) in Angel Blush, Bourjois Blush in Rose d’Or (Golden Rose) & Nude by Nature Bronzer*.

Lips: Essence Lipliner 11 ‘In the Nude’ and Rimmel London Apocalips in 600 ‘Nude Eclipse.*’

Tools: I applied my Foundation, Concealer and Illuminator with Manicare Precision Blending Sponge (it’s amazing!); for my face powder I used the Nude by Nature Kabuki Brush; for my blush I used Manicare retractable blush brush and for my eye shadows and bronzer I used my Profusion brush set.

My thoughts

I was really happy with this look and I got heaps of compliments on my make-up at the party!  The Youtube video was very easy to follow and I’ll definitely be rocking this look again!

Have you tried Soft Glam Make-up?  What did you think?

Till next time,
